Quick answer

Is a swing gate right for my driveway?

A swing gate is a good fit when the drive is fairly level behind the gate and there is room for the leaves to open, usually about as deep as each leaf is wide. If the drive slopes up, is short, or cars park close to the gate, a sliding gate is often the better fit. Safe Haven Gates checks this on a free site visit.

Swing in or swing out?

Most gates swing into the property. Outward swing is possible on some sites with the right operator and enough room before the street.

Types of swing gates

Four swing gate setups.

The opening width, the look you want and the space behind the gate decide which one fits.

01

Single swing

One leaf, for openings up to about 14 feet. Simple and strong.

02

Double swing

Two leaves meet in the middle. Lighter leaves and a classic look.

03

Arched or flat top

Rising arches, dipped tops or flat rails to match the house.

04

Walk gate

A matching pedestrian gate beside the drive, with a lock or keypad.

Where swing gates fit

Level drives with room behind the gate.

Swing gates suit level driveways with clear space behind the gate, estates and farm entrances, and walk-through gates. Double swing gates split a wide opening into two lighter leaves, which is easier on hinges and operators.

Reliable work, a fair price and good communication.

This company did a fantastic job on replacing our VERY inferior ALEKO product with a way better LIFTMASTER system. The LIFTMASTER system is miles apart from the other brand! So much smoother, cleaner and so much more! Safe Haven Electric Gates did a great job on the install making our gate open even further than the other brand. Very nice people to work with.

Highly commend the technician Logan Uzan who came out to my home for a service call. The experience was fantastic from start to finish. He was incredibly knowledgeable and pinpointed the issue immediately—truly spot-on with his diagnosis. What impressed me most was his willingness to share his expertise; he actually took the time to teach me a quick fix I could use in the future if the problem were to reoccur. That sort of helpfulness and transparency is rare these days. Safe haven has been extremely customer service oriented from their initial quotes to service calls. Amazing people and service

Straight answers

Swing gate questions, answered.

Can't find yours? Call the office closest to you.

How much room does a swing gate need?

Each leaf needs clear space behind it about as deep as the leaf is wide, on fairly level ground. We measure the swing path on the site visit.

Single or double swing gate?

Openings up to about 14 feet often use a single leaf. Wider openings usually split into two leaves, which are lighter and easier on hinges and operators.

Arm or underground operator?

Arm operators mount on the gate and post and are the most common. Underground operators hide in a box below the hinge for a cleaner look and cost more to install.

Can a swing gate open outward?

Sometimes. It needs enough room before the street and an operator set up for outward swing. We check local rules and the site first.

Will a swing gate work on a sloped driveway?

Only if the slope runs away from the swing path. If the drive rises behind the gate, a sliding gate or raised hinges are usually needed.

Can you automate my existing swing gate?

Usually, if the gate is solid and the posts and hinges are sound. We may reinforce posts or replace hinges first.

Are swing gates safe for kids and pets?

Yes, with photo eyes, proper force settings and auto-reverse. We test every safety device before we leave.
