Most gates can go solar

Quick answer

Do solar gate openers work in Oregon and Washington?

Yes, when the system is sized for our winters. The panel and battery have to cover short, cloudy days and the number of times the gate opens each day. Safe Haven Gates checks panel placement, shade and daily cycles on a free site visit before recommending a system.

Solar or wired power?

If power is close to the gate, wired is simpler. If the gate is far from the house or the barn, solar usually costs less than trenching a new line.

Solar setups

Four ways to run a gate on solar.

We size every system for gray Northwest winters.

01

Solar swing

Arm operators on single or double swing gates.

02

Solar slide

Low-power slide operators for sliding gates.

03

Solar conversion

Adding a panel and battery to an existing operator.

04

Hybrid

Solar charging with a power backup where available.

Where solar fits

Farm gates, long driveways and remote entrances.

Solar openers suit gates far from a power source: farm and ranch gates, long rural driveways, vineyard and acreage entrances and secondary access gates. On busy gates we size up the battery or recommend wired power so the gate never runs flat.

Reliable work, a fair price and good communication.

This company did a fantastic job on replacing our VERY inferior ALEKO product with a way better LIFTMASTER system. The LIFTMASTER system is miles apart from the other brand! So much smoother, cleaner and so much more! Safe Haven Electric Gates did a great job on the install making our gate open even further than the other brand. Very nice people to work with.

Highly commend the technician Logan Uzan who came out to my home for a service call. The experience was fantastic from start to finish. He was incredibly knowledgeable and pinpointed the issue immediately—truly spot-on with his diagnosis. What impressed me most was his willingness to share his expertise; he actually took the time to teach me a quick fix I could use in the future if the problem were to reoccur. That sort of helpfulness and transparency is rare these days. Safe haven has been extremely customer service oriented from their initial quotes to service calls. Amazing people and service

Straight answers

Solar gate opener questions, answered.

Can't find yours? Call the office closest to you.

Do solar gate openers work in the Pacific Northwest?

Yes. A properly sized panel and battery keep the gate running through our gray winters. Sizing depends on daily gate cycles and how much sun the panel gets.

How many times a day can a solar gate open?

It depends on the operator, panel and battery. Most residential solar systems handle typical daily use; busy gates need a larger panel and battery or wired power.

What happens if the battery runs low?

Most operators warn you or go into a low-power mode, and every system has a manual release so you can always open the gate by hand.

Can you convert my existing gate opener to solar?

Often, yes. Many operators accept a solar charging kit. We check the operator, battery and gate on the site visit.

How long do solar gate batteries last?

Batteries usually last a few years, depending on use and temperature. Replacing them on a schedule avoids a dead gate in winter.

Is solar cheaper than running power to the gate?

When the gate is far from a power source, usually yes, because it avoids trenching and an electrician. Close to the house, wired power is often simpler.

Do solar gates work with keypads and remotes?

Yes. Remotes, keypads and many cellular intercoms run on solar, using low-power models matched to the system.
