Quick answer

Is my automatic gate safe?

It depends on what safety devices it has and whether they still work. Many older gates have no photo eyes, no safety edges or a reverse setting that has drifted. Safe Haven Gates tests the gate, checks it against the UL 325 safety standard for gate operators, and recommends the photo eyes, edges, loops or guards it needs to stop and reverse before it touches a person, pet or car.

Why safety devices matter

A closing gate is heavy and does not see you.

An automatic gate weighs hundreds of pounds and closes with real force. Photo eyes and edges are what make it stop and reverse. They get knocked out of line, dirty or unplugged over time, so we test them on every visit and replace what no longer works.

Reliable work, a fair price and good communication.

  • Gate typeSwing and slide gates need different protection.
  • Operator ageOlder operators may not support new devices.
  • WiringRunning new wire to posts and edges.
  • LoopsCutting loops into concrete or asphalt.
  • Repairs foundWorn parts found during the test.

Which device?

Photo eyes, edges or loops.

Each covers a different risk. Busy and family gates often use all three.

This company did a fantastic job on replacing our VERY inferior ALEKO product with a way better LIFTMASTER system. The LIFTMASTER system is miles apart from the other brand! So much smoother, cleaner and so much more! Safe Haven Electric Gates did a great job on the install making our gate open even further than the other brand. Very nice people to work with.

Highly commend the technician Logan Uzan who came out to my home for a service call. The experience was fantastic from start to finish. He was incredibly knowledgeable and pinpointed the issue immediately—truly spot-on with his diagnosis. What impressed me most was his willingness to share his expertise; he actually took the time to teach me a quick fix I could use in the future if the problem were to reoccur. That sort of helpfulness and transparency is rare these days. Safe haven has been extremely customer service oriented from their initial quotes to service calls. Amazing people and service

What is UL 325?

UL 325 is the safety standard for automatic gate operators. It sets rules for entrapment protection, such as photo eyes and safety edges, and how a gate must stop and reverse.

Does my gate need photo eyes?

Yes. Every automatic gate should have photo eyes across the opening so it stops and reverses if something is in its path. Many older gates were installed without them.

My gate closed on my car. What should I do?

Stop using the automatic close and call us. The photo eyes, loop or reverse setting is not working, and it needs to be fixed before the gate runs again.

Can you add safety devices to an old gate?

Usually. We add photo eyes, edges and loops to most operators. If the operator is too old to support them, we tell you and quote a replacement.

How often should gate safety be checked?

At least once a year, and any time the gate is hit, repaired or acting strangely.

Are slide gates or swing gates safer?

Both are safe with the right devices. Slide gates need roller guards and gap protection. Swing gates need clear space and photo eyes on the swing path.

Do you check gates you did not install?

Yes. We test and upgrade gates of any brand, whoever installed them.
